Back now and after the Gallipoli tour we had a shot break and were taken on a private tour of Helles, this was the British and Turkish section of the peninsula.
This is the site of a Turkish hopspital that Hamilton ordered the bombing of, killing some thousand or so wounded
Plus we saw the fortifications that have been on the peninsula for hundreds of years. This area has always been a strategic port during any conflict.
Basically when someone wants to control the European/Asian continents this is where they come.
It all started with Troy!
Our guide was again very informative, and as we were a small group, he gave us all a character so we would follow the story and join in some roll play. Greg was Hector, if you've seen the most recent movie that's the Eric Bana part. I was Aphrodite. I hate roll play but we had fun.
Troy is a phenomenal place the original city was built in 3000 BC and over the next 4000 years was destroyed, rebuilt, extended over and over 7 times to be exact. Each time getting bigger and bigger.
Troy was discovered by a guy that had read Homers Iliad, and worked out from these books that the so called mythical Troy was at the mouth of the Dardenelles. The area being so flat had only a few options of where this city on a hill could be and on his second attempt, he found it. Cut a deal with the sultan at the time but smuggled most treasures out to England and sold them to the British museum.
